Presented is the complete 407-card set of 1952 Topps baseball cards. Each card has been graded by PSA. With its 7.03 GPA, this assembly merits "#17 Current Finest" placement in the PSA Set Registry's 1952 Topps - Basic classification.
Greatness is often used to describe accomplishment planned and realized over an extended period of time. Topps managed to attain greatness in one bold stroke with the company's inaugural edition of "Giant Size" baseball trading cards. In 1952, the Topps Company mounted an assault on the Bowman Gum Co., the established card monolith, by producing a set of baseball cards which immediately and quite successfully overpowered the competition. Topps could have been satisfied with just that initial success. But with the passage of years, it slowly became clear that Topps' 1952 edition had become the cornerstone for not just the individual collector, but the hobby itself. The 1952 series established the benchmark of quality against which all others would be compared and judged. Topps made its cards bigger, brighter, and far more impressive, and they were unlike anything young baseball fans had ever experienced.
Visually, the series is a masterpiece of color, design and nostalgia. Each of its thoughtfully designed treasures features statistics, a facsimile "autograph," starry caption borders, and an eye-catching team logo. Every aspect of this classic production vibrates with character. The crowning jewel among this sea of diamonds is the first Topps card of America's golden boy—Mickey Mantle. This portrait of Mantle represents all that America yearns for and hopes to become. Here is an image of both youthful innocence and uninhibited exuberance that has transcended the world of sports and the collecting hobby to rightfully take a place among the most recognizable social icons of the 20th century and beyond. In particular, the example serving as this assembly's flagship is a stunning specimen of quality, character, and nobility.
This full set has been meticulously constructed to reveal uncommon quality and consistency. Nothing below the grade of PSA EX 5 made the cut, so to speak, and its top level is an array of PSA NM-MT 8 collectibles (one card graded higher). No qualified grades are included. More telling than the numerical assessments, perhaps, is that the members of this elite '52 Topps fraternity appear to have been selected through evaluation of color depth, surface gloss, and image registration, as most of this set's cards embody those attributes at remarkably high levels of quality.
Additionally noteworthy in this distinguished assembly is the level of quality evidenced in the set's highest-profile entries. Card #311 picturing Mickey Mantle is a sublime specimen displaying the best-imaginable centering to complement smooth, lustrous color in its player likeness. The set's concluding subject—#407, Ed Mathews' Rookie Card—has earned an independent assessment of "Above Average" in its grade. Willie Mays, Roy Campanella, Jackie Robinson, and other stars appear on collectibles that are impressive to extremes seldom found in the majority of sets, which are simply not equipped to survive an objective comparison with such showpieces as these.
